Forward Cason Hohmann was the first of five players selected by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in today’s United States Hockey League Futures Draft. Hohmann, 16, last season led the Tier I Elite Hockey League in points (56) and assists (32) and ranked second in the league in goals (24) while playing 31 games for the Detroit-area Compuware Under-16 midget team. The Plymouth, Michigan, product last month led the USA Hockey 16-and-Under National Tournament in both points (14) and assists (13) while helping Compuware to six straight wins and the national title.The Riders took another Michigan product- Detroit Catholic Central High School defenseman Jacob Downing- in the second round with the twenty-fifth overall pick (order of selection was reversed in each round after the first). Downing last season helped Catholic Central to the Michigan state title.The Riders looked a good deal further north to select forward Jared Linnell in the third round with the twenty-eighth pick. Linnell, a 16-year old native of North Pole, Alaska, scored 22 goals and totaled 72 points in 51 midget games with the Alaska All-Stars last season.The Riders used their fourth round choice- number 51 overall- on Franklin, Massachusetts, goaltender Kevin Venturoso. Last season Venturoso, 15, went 13-11-1 with a 3.43 goals against average in 28 games with the Bridgewater Bandits of the Empire Junior Hockey League.In the fifth round the Riders took defenseman Torey Willsey. Willsey, a 15-year old from Wheaton, Illinois, skated for the Chicago Mission midget program last season.Today’s draftees have been added to the RoughRiders’ affiliate list. Only players born in 1993 were eligible for selection in the Futures Draft. The 2009 USHL Entry Draft is slated for tomorrow.The RoughRiders are fresh off a successful tenth anniversary season. The Riders, who finished with the second most points (81) and wins in one season in team history, went 38-17-5 and finished second overall in the USHL.
